Craig's Take: Tories miscalculated over prorogation
The prime minister abandoned the Commons to take off the political heat. In doing so it sidelined what would have been a near unprecedented parliamentary motion finding the government in contempt for refusing to hand over documents in the Afghan detainee case. There there's Diane Francis who penned Diktat Kanada on Tuesday.
Prorogation was all about avoiding accountability and a head-on collision with Parliament.
With this shut-down, the prime minister overreached himself. He stretched the traditional complacency of the Canadian voters to the breaking point and something snapped. The difference this time was how blatant it was...
The unjustifiable maneuver is undemocratic but most annoyingly un-businesslike for Canada's party of business. Those, unlike MPs, who actually work for a living are outraged if they know about it. Others feel that the country should be prorogued for three weeks with pay to watch the Olympics too under the government's stimulus programs. This would be as effective as shovel-ready projects.
