Prorogue 2 - The Sequel

And here I thought this blog was past its best before date. Twelve months after Harper's first prorogue, it looks like he's at it again.

CTV News - Harper to request Parliament be prorogued until March
But speculation has been rampant in recent weeks that Harper would ask to shut down Parliament until at least after the Winter Olympics in Vancouver are complete.

Such a move would halt the work of Parliamentary committees, including one that is investigating Afghan detainee abuse, an issue that has been plaguing the Conservatives for months...

It was unclear late Wednesday morning if Harper would send his request for prorogation to Governor General Michaelle Jean by letter, or if he would phone or visit her at some point during the day.
Why not an email? Why even bother going through the formality of talking to the G-G. Just do whatever you want to save your political skin. The news is reporting this as if the G-G has already agreed although up til now, there's no public word.
Prorogation will also serve another purpose, Oliver said. Harper will likely appoint another group of new Senators, which will mean the Conservatives will finally hold a majority in the Red Chamber, and by extension, on Senate committees, Oliver said.
So much for an elected Senate. But this is now and that was then.

ETA: Actually, the cons will have a plurality on the committees and take over chairing them. They wouldn't have a majority.
